An AI visibility checker measures how often AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude mention a brand when answering buyer questions in its category. MaxAEO's free checker runs one fixed set of questions across 8 engines and reports mention rate, position, sentiment and the sources each engine cited — so a brand knows where it appears, where it is invisible, and why.

What is an AI visibility check and how does it work?

A growing share of buying research now starts as a question to an AI assistant instead of a search box. The answer that comes back usually names three to six brands — and there is no page two. If your brand is not in that shortlist, the buyer may finish their research without ever seeing your name. AI visibility is simply the measure of how often you make that shortlist, and it behaves differently from classic search visibility: it is decided per question, per engine, and it can be high on one engine while sitting at zero on another.

A proper check works like a survey, not a spot check. MaxAEO takes a fixed set of about ten buyer-style questions for your category — the 'best X for Y', 'what do teams use for Z' questions real customers ask — and puts every one of them to eight AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Every answer is recorded in full, then scored: which brands were named, in what order, with what sentiment, and which web pages the engine cited while answering. That grid of answers is what produces your mention rate, your position among competitors and your visibility score.

Reading the report, three things matter most: your overall mention rate, the engine where you are weakest, and who owns the pages the engines cite. The action plan follows from those — close the questions where you are absent, and get your brand into the community and comparison pages the engines already trust. Because the question set stays fixed, re-running the check after a month of work tells you whether the needle actually moved.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI engines mention your brand when people ask them questions in your category. Unlike a search results page, an AI answer typically names only a handful of brands, so being absent means a buyer may never hear of you. MaxAEO measures it by asking each engine a fixed set of buyer-style questions and recording whether you appear, in what position, with what sentiment, and which sources the engine cited.

Why check 8 engines instead of just ChatGPT?

Because the engines disagree. In the sample report above, Slack is named in 65% of ChatGPT answers but in a very different share on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and each engine leans on different sources. A brand can look healthy on one engine and be invisible on another. Checking all eight at once shows you where the real gaps are instead of averaging them away.

How is the mention rate calculated?

Every buyer question is sent to every monitored engine, which gives a grid of answers — for example 10 questions × 8 engines = 80 answers. Mention rate is the share of those answers in which your brand is named. The report also breaks it down per engine and per question, so a 70% overall rate can still hide a 0% on a question that matters to you.

What does the AI visibility score mean?

The score (0–100) combines mention rate with position and sentiment: being named first with positive framing counts for more than being listed last in a neutral list. It is meant for tracking your own progress over time and for comparing yourself with the competitors in the same report, not as an absolute industry benchmark.

How is this different from an SEO position tracker?

A position tracker records where a URL appears on a Google results page for a keyword. AI engines don't return a page of links; they write an answer and name a few brands, often citing sources that never appear in the top ten. This checker records the answer itself — whether you were named, alongside whom, and which pages were cited — which is the information an SEO tool cannot see.
