llms.txt is a plain-text file at a site's root that tells AI assistants what the site is and which pages matter, in a fixed markdown shape: one H1, a one-line summary in a blockquote, then sections of linked pages with short descriptions. MaxAEO's free llms.txt generator builds one from your sitemap and each page's own title and description, and the llms.txt validator (or checker) tests any llms.txt against that shape, line by line.

What you get on this page

  • A complete llms.txt built from your sitemap: product, docs, pricing and company sections
  • Copy it, download it, or send it straight to the validator
  • Validation of a live /llms.txt or pasted content: H1, summary, sections and link lines
  • Each issue with its line number and the exact fix
  • A one-click follow-up: whether AI crawlers can read your site at all

How to read the generated file and the validation

The generated file
One H1 with your brand name, a blockquote summary to edit, then sections built from your sitemap: product, docs, pricing, company. Each link carries a one-line description; rewrite the ones that read generic.
Valid or invalid
Invalid means at least one error: no H1 on line 1, no ## sections, or a list item that is not a link. Warnings — a missing summary, a link without a description, a bare URL — do not fail the file but do reduce its usefulness.
Line numbers
Every issue points at a line in the file shown below it, highlighted, with the exact fix.
Sections and links
A healthy file has four to six sections and a few dozen links. Hundreds of links means you pasted the sitemap; assistants get no guidance from that.

How to make llms.txt useful

  1. 1

    Rewrite the summary line

One sentence: what the product is and who it is for. It is the first thing an assistant reads about you.

  2. 2

    Describe every link

`- [Title](url): what the page covers`. The description is what lets an assistant pick the right page without opening it.

  3. 3

    Order by what buyers ask

Product overview, comparisons, pricing and docs first; blog and company last.

  4. 4

Keep it short; add llms-full.txt if needed

The index stays small. The full version holds the long text for assistants that want everything in one request.

  5. 5

Check the crawlers can fetch it

A robots rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot makes the file invisible to ChatGPT. Run the AEO checker after upload.

What is llms.txt and how do you write one?

An AI assistant that lands on your site has the same problem a new employee has on day one: hundreds of pages and no idea which ones matter. llms.txt is the orientation note. The convention, proposed in 2024 and now published by thousands of sites, is deliberately small — a markdown file at /llms.txt with the site name as an H1, a one-sentence summary in a blockquote, and then sections (Docs, Product, Pricing, Company) each listing a few pages as links with a one-line description. It is not a ranking signal and it does not replace robots.txt; it is a table of contents an assistant can read in one fetch.

The generator reads your sitemap, groups the URLs into the sections assistants look for, takes each page's title and description, and writes the file. Two things are worth editing before you publish: the summary line, because it is the first thing an assistant reads about you, and the one-line descriptions, because a link with no description is a link the assistant has to open to understand. Keep the whole file short — a few dozen links, not the whole sitemap. An optional llms-full.txt can hold the long version.

Once the file is live, validate it. The validator fetches /llms.txt (or takes pasted content), checks the H1, the summary, the section headings and every link line, and reports each problem with its line number and the fix. The most common failures are bare URLs outside a list, list items that are not links, and a missing summary. Then run the AEO checker: a perfect llms.txt behind a robots rule that blocks AI crawlers helps no one.

Why MaxAEO

llms.txt is one item in MaxAEO's site readiness check, next to crawler access, sitemap freshness and readability without JavaScript. The generator and validator exist so that item stops failing; the checker tells you whether the rest of the plumbing lets engines read the file at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

A markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI assistants a short, structured map of a site: name, one-line summary, and sections of linked pages with descriptions. It follows a public convention (llmstxt.org) and is meant to be read in a single fetch.

Does llms.txt help my brand appear in AI answers?

Indirectly at most. It is not a ranking signal, and not every assistant reads it yet. What it does is make the pages you care about easy to find and describe, which helps assistants that do read it pick the right page to cite. Treat it as cheap hygiene, not a growth lever — the pages themselves still have to answer buyer questions.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of the domain, served as text/plain: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Make sure it is not blocked by robots.txt or a login, and that the same URL works with and without www.

What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is the short index. llms-full.txt is optional and holds the full text of the pages you listed, so an assistant can read everything in one request. Start with llms.txt; add the full version only if your documentation is the main thing assistants need.

What does the validator check?

That the first line is a single H1, that a blockquote summary follows, that there is at least one ## section, and that every list item is a markdown link — ideally with a description after a colon. It flags bare URLs, unlinked list items and missing descriptions, each with the line number.

Should I list every page?

No. A few dozen links across four or five sections is the sweet spot: product overview, key docs, pricing, comparisons, about and contact. A file that mirrors the whole sitemap gives the assistant no more guidance than the sitemap did.

How do I check if my llms.txt is valid?

Open the Validate tab and enter your domain to fetch /llms.txt, or paste the file. The llms.txt checker reports each problem with its line number and a fix: a missing H1 or summary line, list items that are not markdown links, relative URLs, and links without descriptions.

Is this llms.txt validator free?

Yes. Validating pasted content runs in your browser with no limit; fetching a file from a site counts toward 10 free checks a day. No signup.
