A Perplexity visibility checker measures whether Perplexity mentions your brand in its answers and — just as important — which pages it cites as sources. Because Perplexity attaches citations to nearly every sentence, visibility there is decided by specific pages: MaxAEO's free check records both the brand mentions and the cited domains behind them.

How does Perplexity decide which brands and sources to show?

Perplexity works retrieval-first: for every question it fetches a set of live web pages, then writes an answer built almost entirely from what those pages say, with numbered citations attached. That architecture has a blunt consequence for brands — you are visible on Perplexity exactly to the extent that the pages it retrieves talk about you. There is no reputation carried over from training data to fall back on, which is why Perplexity visibility can be rebuilt faster than any other engine's, and lost faster too.

MaxAEO's check therefore records two different things and keeps them separate: whether your brand is mentioned in the answer text, and which domains sit behind the citation numbers. The combinations are diagnostic. Mentioned but never cited means third-party pages are doing your talking. Cited but rarely mentioned means your content answers side questions without establishing the brand. The source-type split above — owned, competitor-owned, community — shows who currently controls the narrative; in the Ahrefs sample, community pages on YouTube and Reddit outweigh the brand's own site several times over.

Earning citations is concrete work: pages that open with a direct answer, carry real numbers and comparisons, and stay reachable by PerplexityBot get picked up; slogans do not. Start with the questions where competitor-owned pages are being cited, because those are the answers a rival currently writes for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a Perplexity rank tracker?

People search for tools like this as rank trackers, but Perplexity visibility is better measured in mentions and citations than in positions. Every Perplexity answer cites the pages it was built from, and those citations decide who gets discovered and clicked. This checker records both signals — whether your brand is mentioned, and which domains are cited. The free report is a snapshot; continuous monitoring of the same prompts with citation history is part of the MaxAEO platform.

Why does Perplexity matter more for citations than other engines?

Perplexity is built as an answer engine: it searches first, then writes an answer with numbered citations on nearly every sentence. Users click those citations far more than they click sources in ChatGPT, so being cited on Perplexity sends real traffic, not just awareness. That is why this checker leads with the source list rather than the mention rate alone.

Is being cited the same as being mentioned?

No, and the gap is informative. Perplexity can mention your brand while citing a competitor's comparison page, or cite your blog while never naming you in the answer. The report shows both: the brand mentions in the answer text and the domains behind the citation numbers. When you are mentioned but never cited, third-party pages are doing your talking for you.

Why are Reddit and YouTube cited so often?

Perplexity favors pages that read like first-hand experience and that answer the question directly. Reddit threads and YouTube reviews are exactly that, so for 'best tool for X' questions they routinely outrank vendor sites in the citation list. The sample report shows the split. It means part of your Perplexity visibility is decided in communities you don't own.

How do I get my own pages cited by Perplexity?

Pages that get cited tend to answer a specific question in the first paragraph, include concrete numbers or comparisons, and are crawlable by PerplexityBot. The report's action plan lists which cited pages are currently competitor-owned or community-owned for your questions — those are the topics where a clear, well-structured page of your own has the best chance of being picked up.

How does Perplexity differ from ChatGPT for brand visibility?

ChatGPT mixes what it learned in training with a web search and often names brands from memory; Perplexity leans almost entirely on the pages it retrieves for that query. In practice, ChatGPT visibility depends more on your overall reputation, while Perplexity visibility depends on which specific pages exist and appear in search for the question right now — which makes it faster to move.
