An AI Overview checker (also called a Google AI Overview checker or AI Overviews checker) shows whether Google's AI-generated answer at the top of the results page cites your domain. MaxAEO's free checker takes a domain and returns how many keywords show an AI Overview that cites it, the highest-volume of those keywords, and which page and passage each Overview draws on — from a recent snapshot of US Google results, on the page, without signing up.
What you get on this page
- How many keywords show a Google AI Overview that cites your domain (US results)
- The 20 highest-volume of those keywords, with monthly searches
- Which of your pages each Overview cites, and the passage it drew on
- The snapshot date of the data, so you know how fresh it is
- Daily tracking of AI Overviews and AI Mode — including the ones that leave you out — 7-day free trial, no card
How to read the numbers
- Keywords where an Overview cites you
- How many queries in a US search index show an AI Overview that lists your domain as a source. Zero is common for young sites — it means Google's AI answers your buyers' questions from someone else's pages.
- The keyword list
- The highest-volume of those keywords, with the page of yours the Overview cites. These are the pages Google's AI already trusts — keep them current, and use their format for pages it doesn't cite yet.
- The quoted passage
- The part of your page the Overview drew on. Short, direct answers near the top of a section are what get quoted; long build-ups rarely are.
- Snapshot date
- The data is a recent snapshot of a third-party index of US Google results, not this minute's page. Overviews change often, so treat it as a baseline and re-check in a few weeks.
How to get cited in AI Overviews
- 1
Protect the pages that are cited
The listed pages already win citations. Keep their facts and dates current — a stale page is the easiest one for an Overview to drop.
- 2
Answer the query in one passage
Overviews cite the passage that answers the question directly. Put a 40–80 word answer near the top of the page, under a heading phrased as the query.
- 3
Copy the format that wins
Look at how your cited pages are written — a definition, a numbered list, a comparison table — and use the same shape on the pages that should be cited but aren't.
- 4
Add the sources engines trust
Cite data, name the author, date the page. Overviews prefer attributable passages.
- 5
Track the keywords you care about
This check shows where you are cited today. Which Overviews appear without you, and who they cite instead, is what the tracker follows daily.
Compared with other ways to check
| Asking the engine yourself | Traditional SEO tools | AI Overview Checker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | One keyword at a time, in an incognito window | Rank positions, with an 'AI Overview' flag at best | Every keyword where an Overview cites you, in one check |
| Sources | Scroll the Overview and note the links | Not shown | Your cited page and the quoted passage for each keyword |
| Priority | No sense of volume | Volume without citation status | Cited keywords ranked by monthly searches |
| Repeatability | Different results each day | Daily positions | Re-checkable in one click; daily with the tracker |
How do you check whether Google AI Overviews cite your site?
An AI Overview is the answer Google writes above the organic results. It pulls from a handful of pages and links them as sources; everything else on the page moves down. If you rank third for a keyword and the Overview cites two other sites, most of the clicks you used to get on that keyword now go to the Overview's sources or nowhere. 'Do we rank' is no longer the whole question — 'are we cited' decides whether the ranking still pays.
Checking this one keyword at a time in an incognito window is slow and unrepresentative: Overviews appear for some queries and not others, and the set changes weekly. This checker works from a search index instead. It looks up every keyword for which the index recorded an AI Overview citing your domain, and returns the count plus the highest-volume keywords, each with the page of yours that was cited and the passage the Overview drew on.
Read the list as evidence of what Google's AI already trusts on your site. The cited pages show the format that works for you — a crisp definition, a step list, a comparison table — and they are the pages to keep current, because a stale page is the easiest one for an Overview to drop. The other half of the picture, the Overviews that answer your buyers' questions with someone else's pages, is what daily tracking adds.

Frequently asked questions
An AI Overview is the AI-written answer Google shows above the organic results for many queries. It summarizes a few pages and links them as sources. When it appears, clicks concentrate on those sources, so being cited in the Overview matters as much as ranking below it.
A domain-level check needs every keyword you rank for, not one query. The checker reads a third-party index of US search results that records, per keyword, whether an AI Overview appeared and which domains it cited. That is a recent snapshot rather than this minute's results — the date is shown with the result.
No. Overviews regularly cite pages from outside the top ten, and skip pages that rank first. Citation depends on whether a passage on the page answers the question directly and can be attributed cleanly. That is why this check lists citations, not rankings.
Not in the free check. Finding them means reading every exposed keyword's Overview and its sources, which the AI Overviews tracker does daily for the keywords you choose — together with who is cited instead.
AI Overviews sit on the normal results page; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab that answers in more depth and often cites different pages. This tool measures Overviews. The AI Overviews tracker adds AI Mode answers for the same keywords and follows both daily.
Enter your domain above. The checker looks up every keyword where a Google AI Overview lists your site as a source, in a recent index of US results, and shows the highest-volume ones with the page and passage quoted. Checking a single query by hand works too, but the result varies by day and location, which is why a domain-level check is more reliable.
The share of the searches you care about where Google's AI Overview cites your site. This checker gives the baseline: how many keywords already cite you. The AI Overviews tracker follows it daily for your buyer questions, together with AI Mode.
Yes: 10 checks a day, no signup. Results come from a third-party index of US Google results, so each check shows the date of the snapshot.
