A Google AI Mode tracker checks whether your brand appears in Google's two AI answer surfaces — AI Mode and AI Overviews — for the same buyer questions. The two are generated separately and often disagree, so MaxAEO's free check records both answers side by side, with mentions, competitors and cited pages for each.

| Asking the engine yourself | Traditional SEO tools | Google AI Mode Tracker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Search one query, scroll, repeat in AI Mode | Some flag an AI Overview exists, few read it | Both Google AI surfaces, for every buyer question |
| Repeatability | AI Overviews appear inconsistently | Presence yes/no, not who is named | Same questions, both surfaces, every run |
| Competitor context | Only if the overview happens to list rivals | Position gaps, not recommendation gaps | Brands named in AI Mode vs. AI Overviews, tallied |
| Sources | Source cards you have to expand | Backlinks, not overview citations | Domains cited by each surface, grouped by type |
Google now answers with AI in two different places. AI Overviews sit on top of a normal results page and summarize what already performs for that query. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab that runs several sub-searches, reads more widely, and composes a longer answer with follow-ups. They share models but are generated independently — which is why treating them as one 'Google AI' number hides exactly the losses you need to see. A brand can headline the Overview and be absent from AI Mode's answer to the same question, or the reverse.
The check asks each of your buyer questions on both surfaces and lays the answers side by side, as in the YouTube sample above — named in 94% of AI Mode answers but only half of AI Overviews. For each surface it records who was mentioned, who was recommended first, and which pages were cited. The disagreements are the actionable part: they tell you which surface's retrieval is finding pages about you and which one is not.
Because Overviews stay anchored to strong-performing pages while AI Mode reaches deeper, the fixes differ. For Overviews, the passage that answers the question has to live on a page Google already trusts for that query. For AI Mode, coverage breadth matters more — comparison pages, community answers and clear product pages all get pulled in. Check monthly at minimum; Google changes AI Mode faster than any other surface it runs.
Google is moving searches from blue links to AI answers; this shows what those answers say about you.
AI Overviews sit above every organic result — if they name a competitor, that is the first thing a buyer reads.
Answer the 'are we in Google's AI answers?' question clients now ask first.
The free check is a one-time snapshot: your buyer questions are asked in Google AI Mode and as AI Overviews, and both answers are recorded side by side. That is usually enough to reveal where you are missing today. Ongoing tracking — the same questions re-run on a schedule, with history for both surfaces — is what the MaxAEO platform adds, and it matters here because Google iterates on AI Mode faster than on any other surface it runs.
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary that appears above the regular results on a normal Google search. AI Mode is a separate tab that turns the whole search into a conversation: longer answers, follow-up questions, and a different retrieval process behind the scenes. They use related models but are generated separately, which is why the same brand can be named in one and not the other.
AI Overviews are anchored to the pages that already appear in search for the query and tend to summarize them. AI Mode runs several sub-searches, reads more pages and synthesizes a longer answer, so it names brands the overview never mentions. The sample report shows this gap directly. Treating them as one 'Google AI' number hides where you are actually losing.
No. AI Overviews frequently cite pages outside the top ten and skip pages inside it, because they select for passages that directly answer the question. A #1 position helps but does not decide it. The report lists the domains each AI answer cited, so you can see whether Google's AI is reading your page or a competitor's summary of the category.
AI Mode launched in the United States and has been expanding to other English-speaking markets and languages through 2025 and 2026; AI Overviews are available in most countries. MaxAEO's checks run in English from a US context, which is the most mature version of both surfaces and the one most tools benchmark against.
Google iterates on AI Mode faster than on any other surface, so monthly is the minimum and weekly is reasonable during an active content program. Because MaxAEO re-runs the same buyer questions each time, you can separate a real change in whether Google's AI names you from the ordinary variation between two searches.
