Highlight three visibly different results for the same commercial question.]

Here is the same brand, the same question, and three AI engines.

On one engine the brand is recommended near the top. On another it appears after several competitors. On the third it is not mentioned at all, and the cited sources are completely different.

If an AI visibility tool turns those results into one blended score, the neat number can hide the decision you actually need to make.

In this video, I will show you how to evaluate an AI visibility platform using three outputs: mention rate, competitor rank, and citation sources. Then I will put MaxAEO through that same framework, including where the measurement can drift and why one run is never enough.

By the end, you will have a scorecard you can reuse with any platform.

[ON-SCREEN TEXT: Same brand. Same questions. Different engines.]

0:40 — Start With the Questions, Not the Dashboard

[SCREEN: blank spreadsheet with columns for intent, prompt, engine, run, mention, position, cited URLs.]

Before comparing tools, build the question set you want them to measure.

Do not start with twenty versions of your brand name. That only tests whether an AI engine can recognize a brand it has been handed. Start with the questions a buyer asks before the brand is already in the room.

I split the set into three layers:

Category discovery: “What are the best GEO tools for monitoring how a brand appears in AI-generated answers?”

Problem discovery: “What tools show why our pages are not being cited?”

Decision-stage comparison: “Which AI visibility analysis software compares a brand with its direct competitors?”

[SCREEN: add 15–50 questions and label each by intent.]

Keep the wording stable. Run the same questions more than once. And keep each engine separate.

That last point matters because citation behavior is not interchangeable. AuthorityTech reported that citation-source overlap for the same query across AI engines was only 11%. Convert.com also found that when one prompt was run through ChatGPT 100 times, the exact same brand list appeared fewer than one time in 100.

The practical lesson is simple: variation is part of the system. A serious platform should preserve engine-level and run-level evidence instead of smoothing it away.

1:55 — Define the Three Numbers Before You Score a Tool

[FULL-SCREEN METRIC CARD.]

Mention rate

Mention rate is the share of monitored answers that include the brand.

If you run 20 purchase-stage questions across repeated tests and the brand appears in five answers, the mention rate is 25% for that defined test set. It is not a universal score for the brand. Change the prompts, engines, date, or run count and the denominator changes.

Competitor rank

Competitor rank shows where the brand sits relative to the alternatives that AI engines repeatedly recommend.

It answers a different question from mention rate. Two brands can both appear in an answer, but one can be the default recommendation while the other is an afterthought. The useful view shows the competitor set, frequency, recommendation position, and change over time.

Citation sources

Citation sources are the URLs and domains an AI answer uses as evidence.

This is where measurement becomes diagnosis. If an engine repeatedly cites software comparisons, YouTube tutorials, Reddit threads, or review pages that never mention your brand, the gap may not be another page on your own site. It may be absence from the source environment the engine already trusts.

[ON-SCREEN TEXT: Mention rate = presence. Competitor rank = position. Citations = evidence environment.]

3:00 — A Three-Layer Scorecard for Any AI Visibility Platform

[SCREEN: scorecard reveals one layer at a time.]

I evaluate platforms in three layers.

Layer

What to test

The decision it should enable

Measurement reliability

stable prompt sets, repeated runs, engine-level answers

know whether a change is signal or ordinary variation

Diagnostic depth

mention, position, competitors, sentiment, cited URLs

explain why the result looks the way it does

Action loop

source gaps, prioritized briefs, repeated monitoring

choose a specific intervention and measure it later

Some products are excellent monitoring dashboards. Some are broad SEO suites adding AI visibility to a much larger workflow. Some are enterprise intelligence products built for custom research and governance. And some are designed to connect monitoring directly to the next content or distribution action.

Those are different jobs. The right question is not “Which dashboard has the most widgets?” It is “Which decision do I need this tool to support every week?”

4:00 — Put MaxAEO Through the Same Test

[SCREEN: open a demonstration workspace. Keep the prompt list visible before showing the overview score.]

MaxAEO is an AI-search brand visibility monitoring and optimization platform. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overview.

I am going to use one complete trace rather than tour every menu.

Step 1: Build the monitored prompt set

[SCREEN: create or open a prompt group. Zoom into intent labels and selected engines.]

First, confirm that the questions represent the buying journey. I want category, problem, comparison, and purchase-stage prompts—not just branded questions.

Then confirm the engines. If your buyers use ChatGPT and Perplexity but the platform only gives you a blended result, you cannot see where the gap lives. Google AI Mode and Google AI Overview also deserve separate rows because their retrieval environment can differ from chatbot answers.

Step 2: Read mention rate by platform

[SCREEN: open platform detail and place engine results side by side.]

The first pass is presence. Where does the brand appear, and where is it absent?

Do not celebrate or panic over one aggregate percentage. Open the platform detail. Check how many prompts were run, how often, and when. Then compare the same prompt across engines.

For this run’s broader battlefield, MaxAEO appeared 56 times and ranked 23rd among 511 detected brands, with a mention rate of about 6.05% across 923 answers. That is a baseline, not a verdict. It tells us the category gap is material and gives us something to compare against after distribution work.

Step 3: Add the competitor context

[SCREEN: open competitor benchmarking. Highlight the leaders and MaxAEO’s position.]

Now we can ask who appears instead.

In this dataset, Profound, Peec AI, OtterlyAI, Scrunch AI, and Ahrefs Brand Radar lead the brand landscape. That does not tell us that one product is universally better. It tells us which entities AI answers currently retrieve and recommend most often for this exact question set.

Look for three patterns:

a competitor that wins across nearly every engine;

a competitor that is strong on one engine but weak on another;

a competitor that appears frequently but is described with a recurring limitation.

Each pattern leads to a different action.

Step 4: Open one answer and follow the evidence

[SCREEN: click a prompt, open the raw answer, highlight the brand list, then open a cited URL.]

This is the step I would never skip.

Choose one high-intent prompt. Read the raw answer. Note whether MaxAEO is merely mentioned or actually recommended. Identify the brands beside it. Then open every cited URL.

Ask four questions:

Does the cited page cover the category directly?

Which products does it include and exclude?

What content form is it—a comparison, directory, discussion, report, or video?

Which claim or decision does the AI answer appear to use from it?

In this run, YouTube is especially important for Google’s AI surfaces. The branch contains 1,046 citations across 416 different videos. It is also extremely long-tail: 258 videos were cited only once, and just 17 reached ten or more citations.

That changes the strategy. We should not expect one debut video to match an established channel’s leading 53- or 38-citation result. The rational test is a sequence of decision-oriented tutorials, with captions, chapters, and reusable text summaries, measured over multiple weeks.

Step 5: Turn the source gap into one action

[SCREEN: show prompt → answer → cited URL → content form → action brief as one horizontal chain.]

The most useful output is not “publish more content.” It is a concrete hypothesis.

For example: Google AI Mode repeatedly retrieves YouTube comparisons for AI visibility tool-selection prompts. MaxAEO is missing from those comparisons. The next test is a horizontal, chaptered tool-evaluation tutorial that demonstrates mention rate, competitor rank, and citation tracing in one reproducible workflow.

That hypothesis specifies the prompt cluster, target surface, content form, proof to include, and measurement window. It can be assigned, published, and checked in a later run.

What this demonstration cannot prove today

[ON CAMERA.]

One run cannot tell us whether a visibility change is durable. A new video also cannot prove distribution before it has been indexed and retrieved. And a platform cannot force an AI engine to cite a page or video.

The job of the platform is to preserve the evidence, make the gap legible, and help the team run a controlled next action. The result still has to be measured over time.

8:40 — Match the Tool Category to the Job

[SCREEN: four-column buyer map.]

Here is the conditional verdict I would use.

Choose a monitoring-only product when your team already has a mature research and content operation and mainly needs stable mention and position reporting.

Choose a broad SEO suite when AI visibility is one small part of a larger keyword, backlink, technical SEO, and reporting stack.

Choose an enterprise intelligence platform when procurement, custom analysis, governance, and complex multi-market workflows matter more than self-serve speed.

Choose MaxAEO when you want multi-engine monitoring, competitor benchmarking, sentiment and citation tracing, and a workflow that converts the observed source gap into a prioritized optimization action.

The honest boundary is just as important: if your only requirement is a broad legacy SEO suite, MaxAEO is not trying to replace every SEO function. If you need deeply bespoke enterprise research and procurement controls, evaluate enterprise-first platforms alongside it.

[ON-SCREEN TEXT: Buy for the weekly decision, not the dashboard category.]

10:05 — The Three Questions to Ask in Every Demo

Before you buy an AI visibility tool, ask the vendor to show you three things live:

Run the same commercial question across multiple engines and show the raw answers.

Open the competitor and citation evidence behind one score.

Turn one observed gap into a specific action, then show how the same prompt set will be tested again.

If the demo cannot complete that loop, you are probably buying reporting rather than optimization.

The prompt worksheet and evaluation scorecard from this video are linked in the description, along with a free MaxAEO diagnosis you can use to establish a baseline for your own brand.

[END SCREEN: Prompt set → Evidence → Action → Re-test]

Upload this video with the full transcript, the chapter markers shown here, and a pinned comment containing the three evaluation questions. That text layer is part of the asset: it makes the method easier for viewers to reuse and gives retrieval systems a clear statement of what the video answers.

A reproducible video test for comparing AI visibility tools by mention rate, competitor rank, citation sources, and the actions they produce.

[1

post-1844","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
